Abstract

Family dynamics are a fundamental component of human well-being, as they influence coexistence, communication, the transmission of values, and the ability to cope with everyday situations. The objective of this study was to characterize family dynamics among families residing in the San Antonio Housing Development, Santiago District, Veraguas Province, Panama. A quantitative, descriptive, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of 16 family representatives selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire that assessed family functioning, coping skills, family life, parental involvement, family values, participation in decision-making, and family cohesion; the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed high levels of satisfaction regarding family closeness, communication, coexistence, conflict resolution, parental involvement in their children’s education, the transmission of values, participation in household decisions, and family cohesion. Despite this, a small group of participants expressed dissatisfaction with aspects related to communication, adaptation to change, and conflict resolution. It is concluded that the families studied exhibit predominantly functional family dynamics, characterized by supportive relationships, participation, and cohesion, although there remains room for improvement in skills related to communication and coping with adverse situations.
