Abstract

Ecuador and Colombia maintain a significant trade relationship that has fostered economic growth in both countries. However, in 2026, the implementation of tariffs between the two nations led to a reduction in bilateral trade, impacting businesses and consumers. While tariffs aim to protect domestic production, they can increase prices and decrease competitiveness. This study analyzes how these measures impacted the Ecuadorian economy in terms of foreign trade, prices, employment, and production, with the goal of providing useful information for trade policy decisions and promoting sustainable economic development in Ecuador.

Resumen del artículo, en idioma inglés.

International trade between neighboring countries, such as Ecuador and Colombia, is fundamental for economic development, especially when there is high trade interdependence. In 2026, the implementation of tariffs between the two countries generated tensions and negatively impacted the exchange of goods and services. Although tariffs function as taxes to protect domestic production, they also cause price increases and reduce competitiveness, affecting both businesses and consumers.

This study analyzes the impact of these tariff measures on the Ecuadorian economy, focusing on key aspects such as foreign trade accounting, price levels, employment, and national production. A mixed-methods approach, based on descriptive analysis and reliable secondary sources, is used to assess how tariffs affect economic variables in the context of developing economies.

Furthermore, the importance of education in the business sector is highlighted for adapting to changes generated by trade and fiscal policies, such as tariffs, which alter market dynamics. This research aims to provide evidence to guide decision-making regarding foreign trade and fiscal policies, thereby contributing to sustainable economic development in Ecuador.

In conclusion, understanding the effect of tariffs and their relationship to accounting, taxation, and education is crucial for strengthening the Ecuadorian economy in a context of high regional interdependence.
