Abstract

This study examined the relationship between psychological well-being and work engagement among all employees of a multinational telematics services company in the automotive sector in Quito, Ecuador (N = 171). The sample included personnel across three hierarchical levels operational, administrative, and managerial with heterogeneous educational backgrounds: 49% held a secondary school diploma, 46% had completed undergraduate education, and 5% held postgraduate degrees. Organizational tenure ranged from six months to 21 years. A quantitative, non-experimental, correlational, cross-sectional design with a census approach was used. Psychological well-being was measured using the WHO-5 Well-Being Index, and work engagement was assessed with the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale — short version (UWES-9). Results showed that 49.1% of workers reported high levels of psychological well-being, while 45% scored at a medium level of engagement. Spearman's correlation between both variables was positive, moderate, and statistically significant (ρ = .590; p < .001). Simple linear regression indicated that psychological well-being accounted for 43.9% of the variance in engagement (R² = .439). Dimension-level analysis revealed that vigor showed the strongest association with well-being (ρ = .616), followed by dedication (ρ = .571) and absorption (ρ = .484). These findings provide empirical evidence on the role of psychological well-being as a predictor of work engagement in high cognitive-demand sectors, with direct implications for human talent management and psychosocial risk prevention in the Ecuadorian organizational context.
