Assessment of the Quality of Systematic Reviews in Higher Education Using the PRISMA Method: A Systematic Review

The present study aimed to analyze the growing concerns related to methodological quality and transparency in systematic reviews conducted within the field of higher education. The adoption of the standards established by the PRISMA framework (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) strengthens the methodological rigor of systematic reviews, contributing to more reliable results that support educational decision-making.
The main objective was to evaluate the methodological quality of systematic reviews in higher education through the application of the PRISMA framework. To achieve this, a systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines to ensure clarity, transparency, and reproducibility throughout the process. The literature search was carried out in academic databases such as ERIC, Google Scholar, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Science.
The selected studies were analyzed using the PRISMA checklist, which consists of 27 items related to the review protocol, search strategy, study selection criteria, data extraction, risk of bias assessment, and results synthesis. Systematic reviews published between 2022 and 2025 within the field of higher education were included.
The results showed that only 30% of the systematic reviews adequately complied with the PRISMA criteria. The lowest levels of compliance were observed in the assessment of risk of bias and in the detailed reporting of search strategies. In conclusion, the methodological quality of systematic reviews in higher education shows significant variability and is generally insufficient. Strengthening the implementation of PRISMA guidelines is recommended to improve transparency, reliability, and usefulness of systematic reviews, thereby supporting more evidence-based educational policy decision-making.
